Rebecca Kneale Gould

Rebecca Kneale Gould is Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at Middlebury College, where she co-directs the Religion, Philosophy, and Environment Focus. Trained in the study of religion, her research explores the intersections of religion, environmental thought, and contemporary spiritual practice in North America.

Gould is the author of At Home in Nature: Modern Homesteading and Spiritual Practice in America and co-editor, with Russell C. Powell, of a special issue of the Journal for the Study of Religion, Nature and Culture examining the legacies of influential environmental writers, including Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Muir, and Rachel Carson. Her recent scholarship has addressed topics including Thoreau and race, ecological traditions in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and the relationship between religion and environmental stewardship.

She also serves as Senior Research Associate for The BTS Center and has contributed to documentary projects on nature, spirituality, and the life and legacy of Henry David Thoreau.
