Michele Cheng

Michele Cheng is an intermedia artist, multi-instrumentalist, and puppeteer who interweaves music, visual art, and theater to engage with social issues and cultural identities. As an artist-scholar, she creates work that brings greater visibility to underrepresented narratives through critical inquiry, journalistic approaches, and world-building. Her work has been presented at National Sawdust, Roulette, the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, Bing Concert Hall, the Orange County Museum of Art, Harvard Art Museums, and Emerson Paramount Center in the United States, as well as Puppet Power in Canada; the International Computer Music Conference in Chile; the Irish Sound, Science and Technology Association in Ireland; Accidental Theatre and Sonorities in the United Kingdom; the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon in France; 33 Officina Creativa in Italy; the National Theater and Concert Hall in Taiwan; the Seoul Arts Center in South Korea; and the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre in Thailand, among others. Cheng has been a JACK Studio artist and an associate artist at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, and she has received support from the New Music USA Creator Fund. Her writing has appeared in Leonardo, published by MIT Press, and I Care If You Listen, an editorial initiative of the American Composers Forum.
