The Problem of Free Will

September 14, 2016
Hadel Jarada, PhD candidate

On Wednesday, September 14, Hadel Jarada, PhD candidate in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University, presented on the problem of free will and the diverse stance and contribution of contemporary philosophy to the age-old issue. She also connected these debates to her work on the history of this debate in post-classical (13th-18th century) Islamic theology and philosophy. Her presentation focused on four positions that contemporary philosophers have taken—that is, libertarianism, hard determinism, soft determinism, and compatabilism. She tried to show what is potentiality at stake, philosophically, in taking any one of these positions. She related certain theorems - such as "Frankfurt cases," to similar ideas in the sphere of Islamic theology. Hadel's objective was to show how debates in contemporary philosophy could shed light on the history of this debate in Islamic philosophy and theology.
