"Religions of the World and Ecology" is a ten-volume publication series of the Center for the Study of World Religions (CSWR) at Harvard Divinity School, distributed by Harvard University Press. The series examines the ecological implications of the beliefs, attitudes, rituals, and doctrines of the world's religions, and the resources those traditions may offer for understanding the relationship between human communities and the natural world.

The series grew out of a research project based at the Center. Between 1996 and 1998, ten conferences held at Harvard brought together more than six hundred scholars, religious leaders, and environmental specialists from around the world, and closed with culminating gatherings at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the United Nations, and the American Museum of Natural History. The ten volumes that grew out of the conferences were published by the Center over the years that followed, from 1997 to 2004. Each volume develops the themes explored at one of the conferences and opens with an introductory essay by the series editors on the challenge of the environmental crisis.

## About the Project

The conferences were coordinated by Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim, then of Bucknell University, in collaboration with Lawrence E. Sullivan, the Center's director. At the Center, the conferences were supervised by Don Kunkel and Malgorzata Radziszewska-Hedderick, and the volumes were published under the editorial direction of Kathryn Dodgson.

The project was co-sponsored by Bucknell University and by the Center for Respect of Life and Environment, which originally made the conferences possible. Major funding was provided by the V. Kann Rasmussen Foundation, with additional support from the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, the Association of Shinto Shrines, the Nathan Cummings Foundation, the Dharam Hinduja Indic Research Center at Columbia University, the Germeshausen Foundation, the Harvard Buddhist Studies Forum, the Harvard Center for Middle Eastern Studies, the Harvard Divinity School Center for the Study of Values in Public Life, the Jain Academic Foundation of North America, the Albert and Vera List Endowment, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Laurance Rockefeller, the Sacharuna Foundation, the Surdna Foundation, Theological Education to Meet the Environmental Challenge, and the Winslow Foundation.
