Practice, Pedagogy, and Ethnographic Study.

In this Gnoseologies conversation, Olivia Cejvan and Giovanna Parmigiani explore how spiritual expertise is formed through practice rather than simply claimed. Drawing on Cejvan’s ethnographic research on ritual magic and Swedish Wicca, they examine how knowledge is cultivated through repetition, imitation, and the gradual training of attention within initiatory settings. Together, they consider how knowledge moves through bodies, objects, atmospheres, stories, and secrecy—and how “doing it right” is often felt before it can be fully articulated.

Olivia Cejvan is an anthropologist of religion whose work focuses on esotericism and new religious movements, with particular attention to how magic is taught, learned, and embodied in initiatory communities. She is currently a project researcher at Malmö University, where she studies religious learning in Swedish Wicca. She received her PhD from Lund University in 2023.
