Effective writing is a cornerstone for academics, particularly junior scholars who want to amplify their voices and make their research impactful. Visibility and publications are critical for early-career academics, particularly those with time-limited appointments, such as postdocs or research associates. However, scholars often find their work confined to academic journals hidden behind paywalls, limiting their readership to a narrow audience. The CSWR is committed to fostering a robust writing culture that benefits its researchers during and beyond their time at Harvard.

During the 2025 J-term, the CSWR will make its in-house experts available to the broader University community and will offer three specialized workshops designed to refine writing craft, share research work with the broader public, and support personal and professional growth.

**10 am-noon: Peer-Editing**

This workshop will introduce a peer-editing methodology for classrooms, research, and work environments. Participants will have the opportunity to peer-edit a 1,000-word selection from any current project. This session offers a valuable chance to receive constructive feedback on content and impact, along with detailed suggestions on structure, grammar, style, and usage. Facilitated by [Aaron Ullrey](https://cswr.hds.harvard.edu/people/aaron-michael-ullrey).

**1-3 pm: The Art of the Pitch**

Learn the essentials of successful pitching in this hands-on workshop. Using real examples from Harvard community writers, participants will explore the do’s and don’ts of pitching to magazines and identify suitable publications for various scholarly topics. Facilitated by [Rachael Petersen](https://cswr.hds.harvard.edu/people/rachael-petersen).

**3-5 pm: Creative Writing**

Learn tricks, tools, and techniques to refine drafted poems into polished works. Considering topics such as word choice, line breaks, voice, structure, imagery, and cutting, participants will experiment with found language, rough notes, and even “bad writing” to create accomplished poems. Suited to beginners and more experienced writers. Facilitated by [Sherah Bloor](https://cswr.hds.harvard.edu/people/sherah-bloor).
