In the now-globalized culture that has descended from the European Enlightenment, poetry and philosophy are frequently considered mutually exclusive endeavors. Culture would also include a culture highly skeptical of anything that might be termed ‘spiritual insight’. These two facts are connected; an aggressive neglect of a certain kind of thinking underlies both. Jan Zwicky will offer a brief overview of this neglected way of thinking and argue that it gives us access to a certain kind of ontological awareness. This kind of ontological awareness, she'll propose, underlies not only lyric poetry and certain canonical philosophical texts, but also spiritual insight.

Jan Zwicky is a Canadian poet, independent scholar, and musician. She has published ten collections of poetry, most recently, The Long Walk. Her books of philosophy include Wisdom & MetaphorLyric Philosophy, and Alkibiades’ Love. Zwicky’s literary work has won numerous honors and is frequently cited for its lyricism; her philosophical work is known for its combination of originality, clarity, and rigor. A native of the great western plains, she now lives on a small island off Canada’s west coast.

This event will be live streamed, and can be viewed on the HDS website when the event begins on Thursday, April 26th at 5:30 pm EST.
